Blue Tigers drop two to Gorillas

One a nail-biter, the other a blowout.

Both were losses for Lincoln in a doubleheader with Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon.

Lincoln University dropped a 5-3 decision in the opener before falling 10-0 in the nightcap. Both games lasted seven innings.

Pittsburg State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener with two runs in the second, a run in the third and two more in the fourth.

That's when Lincoln started to rally.

Colby Shepherd picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, Cody Huff added an RBI double in the fifth and Logan Smith blasted a solo home run in the seventh.

Andrew St. Pierre kept the Blue Tiger rally going in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate. The game ended on a flyout.

St. Pierre picked up two of Lincoln's six hits.

Joe Jungmeyer took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of work as the starter. Joshua Register tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Darren Lasley pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Mat Stalcup was the winning pitcher for Pittsburg State, allowing three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work with 13 strikeouts.

The second game wasn't much of a contest, with Pittsburg State cruising to the 10-0 win.

The Gorillas scored three runs in the first, another in the second, two more in the sixth and four in the seventh.

PIttsburg State held a 13-3 advantage in hits.

Jacob Busch took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Cody Wren was the winner, tossing seven innings and allowing three hits with seven strikeouts.

Lincoln (4-26, 3-22 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) and Pittsburg State (22-14, 18-12 MIAA) close the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
