Recalls this week: baby socks, infant clothing, handgun vaults, more

Baby socks with decorations that can pose a choking hazard and handgun vaults that could fail to lock are among this week's recalled consumer products. Others include propane cylinders with potential leaks and infant clothing with potentially faulty zippers.

BABY SOCKS

DETAILS: "Aubree's" and "Hearts" baby socks made by Asia Socks and imported by Trumpette Inc. They were sold in sizes 0 to 12 months. "Aubree's" socks have flowers attached to the toes. "Hearts" socks have bows attached to the toes of the heart-patterned socks. "TRUMPETTE" is printed on the soles. They were sold in packages of six pairs of socks in multiple colors. They were sold from Dec. 2012 through Feb. 2013.

WHY: The flowers and the bows on the baby socks can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children

INCIDENTS: Eight reports of the flowers or bows detaching from the socks. No injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 33,000 pairs.

INFANT CLOTHING

DETAILS: One-piece footed infant clothing with a zipper imported by Carters Inc. The recall involves eight styles of one-piece, footed cotton clothing for infants with a zipper from the foot to the neck. They were sold in sizes newborn, 3, 6, and 9 months from Dec. 2012 through Jan. 2013. They include: Baby B'gosh with style number 414-208; Child of Mine with style number 715-839; and Just One You with style numbers 520-242, 597B537, 520-243, 597B538, 520-244, and 597B539.

WHY: The zipper pull can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

MAGNET SETS

DETAILS: Six retailers are recalling Buckyballs and Buckycubes, which are high-powered magnet sets. They were imported by Maxfield & Oberton LLC, which has refused to participate in the recall and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has filed a complaint against the company. The companies taking part in the recall include Barnes & Noble Inc., Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., Brookstone, participating Hallmark retailers, Marbles the Brain Store, and ThinkGeek. The sets vary in the number of magnets included and come in a variety of colors. Individual magnets in the set are about 5 millimeters in diameter.

Consumers should take the high-powered magnet sets and all associated individual magnets away from children and teenagers and contact the retailer from which they purchased the product to obtain instructions for their remedy.

WHY: These products contain defects in the design, warnings and instructions, which pose a substantial risk of injury and death to children and teenagers.

INCIDENTS: 54 reports of children and teens ingesting the product, with 53 of these requiring medical interventions.

HOW MANY: About 3 million sets have been sold since 2010.

CABLES

DETAILS: CE Tech riser cables sold in boxes of 1,000-foot lengths. It is intended to run between floors of a building as data cable. This type of cable must self-extinguish in a fire. The cable is gray and marked (UL) E316395. The box is blue and black and is marked CE Tech 1,000 ft. riser cable, Cat 6 23-4. They were sold at Home Depot Inc. stores from Jan. 2013 through Feb. 2013.

WHY: The riser cable does not meet fire resistance standards for riser cable, posing a fire hazard.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

PROPANE CYLINDERS

DETAILS: 100-pound Propane Cylinders made by Manchester Tank & Equipment Co. They were made from January through September of 2012. The date of manufacture is printed on the collar by month and year, so "6 (asterisk) 12" represents June 2012. The name Manchester and the water capacity "WC238(hash)" are also pressed into the collar. Manchester 100-pound propane cylinders with a green dot on the hand-wheel on the top of the cylinder are not included in the recall. They were sold from Jan. 2012 through March 2013.

WHY: Fuel can leak from the thread connection between the cylinder and valve, posing a fire hazard if exposed to an ignition source.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

HANDGUN VAULTS

DETAILS: Compact and Large Handgun Security Vaults imported by Battenfeld Technologies Inc. The recall is for combination lock models of Lockdown Compact and Large handgun security vaults. The vaults are black, steel cases used to store handguns or other valuables at home, in the car or when traveling. The Compact vault's interior is 5.25 inches wide, 8.25 long and 1.5 inches deep and can store most compact automatics and revolvers. The Large vault's interior is 6.125 inches wide, 9.75 inches long and 1.5 inches deep and can store most full-sized automatics and revolvers with barrels up to 4 inches long. The vaults are lined with foam padding in the top and bottom and are secured by a three-digit combination lock. A label with the words "Lockdown" and "www.lockdownvaults.com" is located to the left of the combination lock. The serial number is located on a paper label on the inside surface of the vault bottom under the foam. Recalled Compact and Large vaults have serial numbers from ST120002600 to ST120006800. They were sold from May 2012 to March 2013.

WHY: The lock can fail and allow unintended access to the contents of the vault.
