Your Opinion: Show solidarity for nation's military

April 5th, 2013 by Larry Russell Johnson, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

Our military will go to hell and back and turn over mountains and if necessary die for our nation. They fight for our rights and for the principles we stand for. Freedom - it comes with the highest cost, the cost of blood.

America failed to learn from our Vietnam experience because President Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" ideology to contain the spread of Communism underestimated a well-motivated and determined North Vietnamese army.

After 9/11 America's goals and values became scattered with President George W. Bush's "Action with Reaction" ideology to just jump with both feet first into Afghanistan and Iraq to fight the war against terrorism, with the use of emotion and misinformation, without facts and figures from which conclusions can be drawn.

In 2003 George W. Bush assumed that Iraq was concealing weapons of mass destruction inside their country and ordered an invasion to occupy Iraq and failed to find any weapons of mass destruction.

Mark Twain once said, "There are lies, damn lies, and there is statistics."

George W. Bush should never have ordered an invasion of Iraq in 2003 without proof and location of weapons of mass destruction. It resulted in needless casualties, property damage, a 10-year occupation of Iraq and helped Iraq's natural enemy, Iran, create a nuclear weapon.

After the 2001 World Trade Center attack, George W. Bush ordered an attack on Afghanistan because of information linking a terrorist organization that master-minded the 9/11 attack from Afghanistan; locking mechanisms have been available on cabin doors, years before 9/11; this tragedy would have been prevented. Homeland security failed to investigate this matter or acknowledge the existence of cabin door locks.

The government is morally obtuse by not taking care of our soldiers who are coming home without arms and legs, filing for medical benefits that is taking from six months to nine months for the paperwork to clear.

We must post our solidarity and support to those who wore our nation's uniforms.
