Your Opinion: Prepare children for future jobs

Your Opinion: Prepare children for future jobs

Dear Editor:

Its no secret the climate of America's workplace has changed. Once upon a time landing a spot at the local manufacturing plant or earning your bachelor's degree in pretty much any area of study was enough to grant most people a comfortable and financially stable life.

With employers scaling back on retirement benefits, entitlement programs never being too far from the chopping block, crushing student loan debt, and lack of full time employment positions, it's pretty scary to see all the challenges that face young people trying to enter today's work force and plan their financial future.

I would like to see our school systems both public and private take steps to prepare children and teens for their financial future. This could range from educating kids on workplace etiquette, being a responsible consumer, and personal money management.

As a business owner myself I would like to see more emphasis put on self employment and entrepreneurship, teaching kids that sometimes we need to create our own opportunity rather than waiting for some one to give you one.

In my case to carve my own path I pursued a combination of trade school and industry specific training to eventually start my own business.

Generations to come will determine the fiscal fate of our country so the more prepared we can get our young people, the better off our nation will be as a whole.
