Fourth-graders add to new school's landscaping

As part of the state's Trees for Tomorrow program, 20 fourth-graders at Pioneer Trail Elementary School helped plant two new young redbuds in front of their school Monday morning. The event is part of an initiative to plant thousands of trees around Missouri to compensate for ones cut down when roads and bridges are built.

Hauling around heavy bags of mulch? Digging in the soil? Getting one's hands dirty?

Most adults consider those chores a pain. But to 20 fourth-graders at Jefferson City's Pioneer Trail Elementary, planting two redbud trees Monday morning was a thrilling break from the school routine.

The children were included in a ceremony celebrating the partnership between two state agencies - the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) - called Trees for Tomorrow.
