The Cole County circuit clerk's office is keeping better records, State Auditor Tom Schweich said Tuesday.
Five months after saying the circuit clerk's office had three main problem areas in its financial operations, Schweich released a follow-up report saying the office has "implemented" 10 of 11 recommendations made in the first audit.
And implementation of the other recommendation is "in progress."
Brenda Umstattd, the elected circuit clerk, resigned April 18, shortly after Schweich released the 19-page report that cited "deficiencies in internal controls, noncompliance with legal provisions" and some missing money as the main problem areas.
On May 3, Gov. Jay Nixon appointed then-Court Administrator Marilue Hemmel to serve as circuit clerk until January.
Cole County voters on Nov. 6 will elect either Hemmel, a Democrat, and Republican Dawnel Davidson to complete the final two years of Umstattd's four-year term.
Schweich's follow-up report introduces its "status of findings" section with a comment: "The current Circuit Clerk has taken steps to address the audit recommendations."
The eight-page report then details the problem reported five months ago, the original recommendation and an explanation of the current status.
