Communication is the key to making neighborhoods safer.

That was the message given Thursday night at various neighborhood meetings as part of the National Night Out Against Crime.

At El Puente, 1102 East McCarty St., Officer Chuck Walker and Sgt. Joe Matherne talked with area residents about how recent police action in that area was the result of residents telling authorities what was going on.

"We were able to clean out some bad tenants and landlords thanks to information we got from people like yourselves," Walker said. "That's doing the right thing to keep kids and families safe."
