Salvation Army Maj. Bettie Cedervall, center, died unexpectedly Monday. She is survived by her husband, Maj. Kevin Cedarvall and their children, Christina and Johnathan.

A "champion for the underdog," Maj. Bettie Cedervall was willing to step out when something wasn't right or to come alongside those who needed help, according Maj. Beth Trimmell.

Cedervall, 39, died Monday morning after an illness.

She and her husband, Maj. Kevin Cedervall, had been The Salvation Army corps officers in Jefferson City for more than a year. And they had been officers for 17 years.

Cedervall was in charge of the women's ministries, where she developed a crafting group, said Trimmell, who is the Salvation Army's regional coordinator.
