Saturday's SEC College Football Capsules

For Sept. 15, 2012

Here are college football results from the SEC for Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012:

No. 1 Alabama 52, Arkansas 0

Eddie Lacy ran for three touchdowns and the Crimson Tide forced five turnovers to win its 21st straight to SEC opener.

Vinnie Sunseri and Haha Clinton-Dix had interceptions against the Razorbacks, who played without quarterback Tyler Wilson because he had a head injury in last week's loss to Louisiana-Monroe.

The shutout was the second straight for the Crimson Tide (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference). The last time Alabama, which has forced 12 turnovers this season, had back-to-back shutouts was against Vanderbilt and Kentucky in 1980.

AJ McCarron was 11 of 16 passing for 189 yards and a touchdown.

Arkansas (1-2, 0-1) had just 44 yards of total offense at halftime and 137 for the game. The Razorbacks were held scoreless in Razorback Stadium for the first time since a 7-0 loss to Baylor in 1966.

No. 3 LSU 63, Idaho 14

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Ronald Martin and Lavar Edwards each intercepted deflected passes and returned them for scores, and No. 3 LSU rolled to a 63-14 victory over winless Idaho on Saturday night.

LSU intercepted Idaho's Dominique Balckman four times, with Martin snagging two, en route to an NCAA FBS record 40th-straight non-conference regular season victory.

LSU (3-0) also set a Tiger stadium mark with 20 straight home wins, while extending its nation-long regular-season winning streak to 16 games.

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger passed for 222 yards and two TDs.

Kenny Hilliard rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman running back Jeremy Hill scored twice in his Tigers debut and Alfred Blue also had a rushing TD.

Blackman was 23 of 36 for 174 yards and two TDs. Gary Walker had a 94-yard interception return for Idaho (0-3), setting up the Vandals' first touchdown.

No. 7 Georgia 56, Florida Atlantic 20

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Aaron Murray passed for a career-best 342 yards and two touchdowns, and scored twice on short runs.

Playing without Jarvis Jones and two other defensive starters, Georgia (3-0) struggled in the first half to slow a Florida Atlantic team that scored a single touchdown against lower-division Wagner. The 44-point underdog Owls kept converting third downs and found themselves tied at 14 early in the second quarter.

But the Bulldogs simply had too many weapons for Florida Atlantic (1-2), piling up a school-record 713 yards. Murray completed 14 of 19, including a 67-yard touchdown to Michael Bennett and a 36-yarder to Arthur Lynch. Murray scored himself on a pair of 1-yard sneaks.

No. 8 South Carolina 49, UAB 6

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Connor Shaw went 8 of 14 for 107 yards before reinjuring his throwing shoulder.

Shaw left the game after taking a brutal hit just after he released a 20-yard pass to Bruce Ellington late in the first half. Athletics officials said the junior aggravated the bruised right shoulder that kept him out of last week's game.

Sophomore Dylan Thompson took over again, throwing a 95-yard touchdown pass to Damiere Byrd that put South Carolina up 35-6 midway through the third quarter.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier picked up his 200th college coaching win, joining Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, Texas' Mack Brown and Nevada's Chris Ault as the only active Division I coaches to reach that mark.

UAB (0-2) gained 267 yards but was kept out of the end zone.

No. 14 Texas 66, Mississippi 31

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - David Ash threw for a career-high 326 yards and four touchdowns and No. 14 Texas easily beat Mississippi 66-31 on Saturday night.

Ash connected on touchdown passes of 46 and 55 yards as the Longhorns gained 676 total yards. Mike Davis caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown while Marquise Goodwin rushed for 80 yards, caught two passes for 102 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Texas (3-0) led 31-10 by halftime and 52-24 by the end of the third quarter. It was the most points given up by Ole Miss in a game since 1917.

Ole Miss (2-1) couldn't match the Longhorns' speed or strength. Texas scored on seven straight possessions at one point, including touchdowns on six of those drives.

Bo Wallace threw for 178 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for the Rebels. Donte Moncrief caught seven passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.

No. 18 Florida 37, No. 23 Tennessee 20

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Jeff Driskel threw a pair of touchdown passes and Trey Burton rushed for two more scores as Florida scored the final 24 points to beat beat the Vols for the eight straight meeting.

Mike Gillislee ran for 115 yards to lead a 336-yard rushing effort for the Gators (3-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference), who have outrushed Tennessee in each game of the streak.

Burton added 91 rushing yards on only three carries and Driskel ran for 81 yards on eight attempts.

Tyler Bray went 22 of 44 for 257 yards and threw touchdown passes to Cordarrelle Patterson and Mychal Rivera for Tennessee (2-1, 0-1). Bray also threw his first two interceptions of the season.

Missouri 24, Arizona State 20

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Corbin Berkstresser ran for a score in his first career start at quarterback in place of injured James Franklin, and Missouri's defense forced four turnovers to ease the pressure on the redshirt freshman in a 24-20 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night.

Missouri (2-1) built a 17-point cushion in the third quarter in front of a sellout crowd of 71,004, the school's first for a non-conference game since Notre Dame in 1984. The Tigers held on late a week after fizzling late in a 21-point loss to No. 7 Georgia that spoiled the school's SEC debut.

Marion Grice scored on a pair of fourth-quarter runs that cut the deficit to four for Arizona State (2-1), which had a fumbled snap on the second extra-point kick.

Kendial Lawrence scored on a pair of short runs, and T.J. Moe was strong overall with eight catches for 88 yards and a 43-yard kickoff return to open the game for Missouri.

Missouri kicker Andrew Baggett made a 46-yard field goal early but missed from 37, 45 and 48 yards.

Western Kentucky 32, Kentucky 31, OT

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Western Kentucky utilized a trick play in overtime to stun Kentucky on the road 32-31 Saturday night.

The Hilltoppers (2-1) went for the win with a two-point try after Antonio Andrews pulled them within a point on 2-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Kawaun Jakes threw a lateral to Andrews, who threw back to Jakes to clinch the victory.

The Wildcats (1-2) had scored first in overtime on a Jonathan George 12-yard run to take a 31-24 lead. On Western Kentucky's OT possession, a roughing-the-passer call set the Hilltoppers up at the Kentucky 2-yard line and led to Andrews' TD.

The Hilltoppers raced out to a 17-0 first-half lead, intercepting Kentucky's Maxwell Smith three times - the sophomore quarterback would add another later. Smith did lead Kentucky on a 77-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 22-yard, game-tying touchdown pass to wide receiver DeMarcus Sweat.

Mississippi St. 30, Troy 24

TROY, Ala. (AP) - Tyler Russell and Chad Bumphis hooked up on touchdown passes of 72, 58 and 25 yards to help lead Mississippi State to a 30-24 victory over Troy on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (3-0) finished their scoring with Bumphis's 25-yarder at the back of the end zone on fourth-and-4 with 7:00 left. That proved enough in the latest Sun Belt scare against a Southeastern Conference team.

The Trojans (1-2) stayed within striking distance with Will Scott's 40-yard field goal three minutes later in Troy's first time hosting an SEC team. LaDarius Perkins, who gained 179 yards on 23 carries, helped the Bulldogs run out the clock.

Bumphis became the first Mississippi State player to catch three touchdown passes since Sammy Milner did it against Florida in 1969. He had six catches for a career-high 180 yards.

Mississippi State is off to its first 3-0 start since 1999.

Vanderbilt 58, Presbyterian 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Zac Stacy rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown on eight carries as Vanderbilt defeated Presbyterian 58-0 for the Commodores' first win of the season Saturday.

Vanderbilt (1-2, 0-1 SEC) started Austyn Carta-Samuels at quarterback in place of Jordan Rodgers, who had made nine consecutive starts since last season.

Carta-Samuels' first snap as starting quarterback was a handoff to Stacy, who broke a tackle at his legs to run 86 yards for a touchdown.

Carta-Samuels, a transfer from Wyoming who sat out last season, completed 13 of 20 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown.

The best chance for Presbyterian (1-2) to score came in the second quarter when the Blue Hose drove to the Vanderbilt 5-yard line.

Commodores cornerback Trey Wilson ended the scoring opportunity when he picked off Blue Hose quarterback Tamyn Garrick in the end zone and returned the interception 100 yards for a touchdown.

Texas A&M 48, SMU 3

DALLAS (AP) - Quarterback Johnny Manziel accounted for 418 total yards and six touchdowns in three quarters, and Texas A&M overcame a sluggish start to beat SMU 48-3 Saturday.

Manziel threw for four touchdowns and a school-freshman-record 294 yards. He also had 13 carries for 124 yards and a pair of a scoring runs.

Texas A&M (1-1) racked up 605 yards in offense and bounced back after losing its Southeastern Conference opener last week to No. 18 Florida.

SMU (1-2) suffered its most lopsided home loss since 2002, when it dropped a 52-6 contest to Oklahoma State.

Chase Hover kicked a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter for SMU's only points.

Freshman Mike Evans had 123 yards receiving and Uzoma Nwachukwu caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Aggies, who are 11-0-1 against their former Southwest Conference rivals since 1984.

Auburn 31, Louisiana-Monroe 28, OT

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Cody Parkey hit a 35-yard field goal in overtime on Saturday to lift Auburn to a 31-28 win over a Louisiana-Monroe team trying to pull off another Southeastern Conference upset.

The Tigers (1-2) stopped Kolton Browning and the Warhawks to start overtime, and Justin Manton's 37-yard field goal fell short. Then Tre Mason rushed for 10 yards, and Kiehl Frazier downed the ball on the next play to set up Parkey's winning kick.

The Warhawks (1-1) rallied from 28-7 down to shock Arkansas in overtime a week ago, a rare victory against the SEC. This one wouldn't have been that much of a shocker against struggling Auburn, which led 28-14 midway through the fourth quarter.

Onterio McCalebb rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers. Kiehl Frazier threw one touchdown pass and caught another, both 33 yards.

Browning went 28-of-46 passing for 237 yards and three touchdowns.
