NW Missouri St. offers gender-neutral housing

MARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) - About 35 students are participating in a new gender-neutral housing initiative at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

The university began offering the housing plan this fall after a request from some transgender students but it is open to all students. The policy allows male and female students to choose to live together.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports (http://bit.ly/TSNyS4 ) that gender-neutral housing is offered in Tower Suites and Forest Village Apartments.

Rose Viau, director of residential life, says most students participating are cousins, brothers and sisters, and friends.

She says the transgender students who sought the policy wanted more flexibility in choosing where they could live.
