Mid-Missourians ready to help with Sandy aftermath

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard's largest cities Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet tall.

Mid-Missouri is well represented in the recovery efforts for the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Ameren Missouri announced Saturday it would send more than 100 personnel to south New England, with some of the initial 50 coming from Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks. The company sent an additional 57 linemen on Monday afternoon, bringing the total to 99 linemen and 30 support and supervisory personnel.

The American Red Cross' Heart of Missouri Chapter volunteers and vehicles are deploying to Middletown, N.Y., in response to the storm. One chapter volunteer deployed to Pennsylvania on Saturday. A volunteer from Osage County is deploying to Harrisburg as a logistics chief.

Three members of the Jefferson City Fire Department serve on Missouri Task Force-1, the search and rescue team that responds to federal disasters. As of Monday afternoon the group was ordered to ....
