Dear Editor:
It has been awhile since I last sent a letter to the editor. It is difficult to express my opinions during an election year rife with hate speech and questionable rhetoric. As always I do not claim to know everything there is to know, but I still have opinions to share.
First and foremost I believe that it is my patriotic duty to cast my vote regardless of party for those persons who appear to genuinely want to do what is best for the American people. Certainly I do not believe that any one party is always the best choice. The possible abuse of power by those elected should be everyone's first concern.
As a Christian I care a great deal about equal concern for everyone. I want to see a government who cares equally about the poor as well as the rich. I want to see more rapid acceptance and respect for all races, religions and lifestyles. As long as we do not inflict harm on others all of us should expect to get our promised "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness."
As a woman who for 80 years has had to deal with a deeply seated cultural belief that women are inferior to men (historically known as misogyny and currently as "a war on women.") I want a reason to believe that equality between men and woman will someday be a reality and those who are elected this year will strive to make it happen.
Perfection may not be possible but we can make headway if our elected officials use their power to make life better for everyone. It is up to us to pay attention to the way they govern.
A carefully chosen vote is the responsibility of all voters. If we do not do our homework and make our choices based on what is best for all Americans we will deserve what happens in the future.
