Jackson County charges man in KC bus assault

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jackson County authorities have filed charges against a Kansas City man accused of assaulting a city bus driver after the driver ordered him off the bus.

The Jackson County prosecutor's office said in a release that 18-year-old Michael Cubie was charged Saturday with felony assault with intent to commit bus hijacking and with misdemeanor third-degree assault.

The assault, which was captured on widely circulated surveillance video, occurred Monday as a group of people exited the bus after not paying their fares.

Witnesses told police the driver was unconscious briefly after he was punched, which occurred when he was behind the wheel. Police said the driver tried to continue his route after the assault, but other passengers convinced the driver to stop.

Charging documents didn't list a lawyer for Cubie.
