Your Opinion: Tax suggested to aid humane effort

October 6th, 2012 by Judy Baumgartner, Holts Summit in News

Dear Editor:

As a resident of Callaway County, am hoping to appeal to other Callaway County residents.

A recent newspaper article and TV news clip addressed the current financial predicament in which the Callaway County Humane Society (CCHS) finds itself.

The Callaway County Humane Society is run by volunteers and operates totally on donations. It is not affiliated with the animal shelter in Fulton nor Callaway Hills, neither of which accepts/rescues animals from out in the county.

I doubt the citizens of this county realize just how much this small group of volunteers does for us. Even though they have not been able to garner the funds to establish a shelter, they enlist the help of fosters to house and care for animals until homes can be found.

They provide veterinary care, which is not cheap, food and shelter for the animals. County residents phone the CCHS about animals that have been dumped, are injured, starving, or simply strays.

This small non-profit organization has done some big things and I can only hope that Callaway County residents will stand behind it and provide the needed support. Since the sheriff's office calls the CCHS when they are notified of animal issues, maybe the county could implement a small quarter-cent tax to assist?

Just an idea.
