CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Brionna Jones had 16 points and a career-high 19 rebounds and No. 6 Maryland overcame a slow start to beat Illinois 79-63 on Thursday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Jones was 7 of 10 from the field and had 11 defensive rebounds. Kristen Confroy led the Terrapins (12-1) with 17 points.

Chatrice White led Illinois (7-5) with 14 points.

NO. 9 OHIO STATE 85, NO. 24 MICHIGAN STATE 80

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Kelsey Mitchell scored 25 points and Ameryst Alston added 23 in Ohio State's victory over Michigan State in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Shayla Cooper had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Ohio State (9-3), and Asia Doss had 10 points.

Aerial Powers led Michigan State (9-3) with 23 points. Jasmine Hines added 18.

PENN STATE 79, NO. 14 NORTHWESTERN 72

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Freshman Teniya Page scored 27 points, UConn transfer Brianna Banks added 25 and Penn State beat Northwestern in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The Nittany Lions (6-6) made 8 of 12 free throws in the final 1:41 to beat the Wildcats (11-2) for the 20th time in 21 home games and 10th straight time overall.

Nia Coffey had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats.

NO. 12 DUKE 78, NORTH CAROLINA WILMINGTON 56

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Rebecca Greenwell hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points for Duke.

The Blue Devils (11-3) took control in the second quarter by hitting 8 of 12 shots while the Seahawks (4-7) went 3 of 15.

Naqaiyyah Teague led the Seahawks with 14 points.
