Several Mid-Missouri political leaders said last week they remain hopeful for an expansion of nuclear energy production at the Callaway Nuclear Plant at Reform, even though the federal Energy Department last Tuesday announced it chose a different application.

On Tuesday, the Energy Department awarded a grant worth more than $400 million to Babcock & Wilcox, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Bechtel, "to support a new project to design, license and help commercialize small modular reactors (SMR) in the United States."

A wire service story said the department's decision "dash the hopes of state political leaders who envisioned an atomic energy revival in Missouri."
