SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Springfield City Council members have voted to repeal a city ordinance voters approved in February that required local employers to screen workers using the federal E-Verify program.
The Springfield News-Leader (http://sgfnow.co/SbQ6a7) reports council members were scheduled to vote Monday on a bill to strip questionable language from the city code, but instead decided to get rid of the ordinance altogether. Five council members voted for the repeal, while two voted against it.
A judge previously had declared almost all of the E-Verify law to be invalid.
The council will discuss the repeal bill again Dec. 17, with a unanimous vote of all sitting council members required for the repeal to pass.
The city's attorney says the cleanup bill could be reintroduced if the repeal vote fails.
