Girl Scouts learn basics of safety

November 12th, 2012 in News

Girl Scouts throughout Cole County gathered Saturday to learn about various aspects of safety.

The Cole County Girl Scouts Service Unit held safety day for 160 scouts and their families Saturday at the Missouri National Guard. Event Coordinator Theresa Stiles said safety day is meant to help scouts gain their first aid national proficiency badge, which can be difficult to achieve.

"They are required to talk to an EMT, a police officer, they are required to learn first aid principles," Stiles said. "We bring all those entities together so that way the girls can get that."

Stiles said the event featured representatives form various public safety agencies, including highway patrol, emergency management, police and fire. The scouts learned everything from identifying signs of shock to how to put together and use a first aid kit.
