LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky women played the type of game they needed to in preparation for Tuesday's showdown against top-ranked Baylor.
A'dia Mathies had 16 points, six assists and four steals to lead the No. 6 Wildcats over Delaware State 90-50 Saturday in the season opener.
The Wildcats looked sharp throughout as they tuned up for the daunting task of facing Brittney Griner and the defending NCAA champion Lady Bears, who have won 41 straight games.
Kentucky shot 54 percent against the Hornets, including 10 of 22 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats forced the Hornets into turnovers on their first three possessions, and by the time they took their first shot they were already down 7-0. The Wildcats stretched the lead to 20-4 and didn't allow Delaware State to connect on consecutive field goals until less than a minute was left in the first half.
Kentucky finished with 53 points off 32 turnovers.
Tierra Hawkins had 28 points for the Hornets, who had only one assist in the game.
NO. 12 OKLAHOMA 69, CREIGHTON 48
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Aaryn Ellenberg scored 19 points to lead Oklahoma to a season-opening win over Creighton.
Whitney Hand added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Sooners, who shot 48 percent from the field. Ellenberg went 8 of 12 from the floor, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range.
Creighton led in the early going but Oklahoma took control midway through the first half and led by double digits in the game's last 28 minutes.
Ally Jensen was the only player in double figures for the Bluejays with 13 points.
NO. 16 VANDERBILT 82, MCNEESE ST. 71
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tiffany Clarke scored 24 points and Christina Foggie added 18 to lead Vanderbilt past McNeese State in the season opener for both teams.
Jasmine Lister had 10 assists for Vanderbilt, which led 41-39 at the break and opened the second half with a 23-9 that pushed it to 64-48 with 11:57 to play.
McNeese State cut it to 70-62 with 3:31 remaining, but Clarke scored four straight points, putting the Commodores ahead 74-64 and the game out of reach for the Cowgirls.
Ashlyn and Caitlyn Baggett each had 20 points for McNeese State, which had 17 turnovers.
NO. 21 PURDUE 82, S.C. UPSTATE 47
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - KK Houser scored 17 points to lead four Purdue players in double figures and the Boilermakers routed South Carolina-Upstate.
Drey Mingo added 15 points, while Courtney Moses and Taylor Manuel contributed 12 points apiece for Purdue in its season opener. The Boilermakers led 38-25 at halftime in the first meeting between the schools.
Tee'Ara Copney was the only Spartans player in double figures with 16 points.
Purdue outrebounded SC-Upstate 41-26.
DAYTON 92, NO. 25 DEPAUL 80
CHICAGO (AP) - Amber Deane scored 27 points to lead Dayton over DePaul in the championship game of the Maggie Dixon Classic.
Three other players scored in double figures for the Flyers (2-0). Olivia Applewhite scored 13 points, Sam Mackay scored 12 and Ally Malott had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Dayton, which shot 51 percent from the field. The Flyers led 48-35 at halftime.
Jasmine Penny led the Blue Demons (1-1) with 20 points. Katherine Harry had 18 points and 13 rebounds for DePaul, and Anna Martin had 13 points and nine assists.
