Area election results "mixed' in statewide voting

For only the third time in the past 112 years, Missourians this year failed to vote with the nation in choosing the next President of the United States.

Based on the unofficial totals from Tuesday's balloting, the Republicans' ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan captured almost 264,000 more Missouri votes (1,478,959) than the national winners, incumbent Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden (1,215,030).

Four years ago, the Obama-Biden ticket also failed to carry Missouri - but only by 3,903 votes.

Cole County's and Jefferson City's records are more mixed, though, at least in the past five presidential election years, going back to 1996.
