The numbers are staggering.

The Jefferson City Jays and Lady Jays competed in 13 events combined at the 2011 state track meet. The Lady Jays alone will top that with 14 events as the Class 4 Missouri State High School Activities Association State Track and Field Championships begin at 11 a.m. today at Dwight T. Reed Stadium. The Jays are nearly there, participating in 12 events.

"It's nice, it's a nice problem to have," Jefferson City track coach Dan Ridgeway said. "We've got 34 kids out there running around during practice. It just means they were consistent, they've been doing what they've done all year. We have a lot of chances over at the state meet."

With the increased number of athletes participating, Jefferson City hopes to improve upon last year's finishes in the team standings. The Lady Jays finished 22nd with 14 points while the Jays took 43rd with five points.
