Nominations sought for July 4th honor

Mid-Missourians are asked to nominate a local hero to be honored during Jefferson City's Independence Day festivities.

June 10 is the nominations deadline.

The Missouri Credit Union and KPLA Radio are co-sponsors of the "Salute Our Heroes" event, and said in a news release they want people "to nominate heroes they feel deserve the award. The nominations are open to people of all ages and industries."

Nominees can include a local firefighter, a teacher, member of the military or even a member of the family, they said.

The nominations form is available on KPLA's website: kpla.com/includes/forms2/src/?form_id=2.

The website cites characteristics of: performing selfless acts, taking initiative to solve a problem that helps someone, having a positive impact on the community and doing something great even though they realize no one may ever know it.

The winner will be selected by an independent committee of community leaders, and will receive several prizes, including a free hotel stay at the Doubletree, plus dinner and breakfast; transportation (golf cart) around the "Salute to America" grounds; a meet-and-greet with the featured band (which hasn't been named, yet); a special award to be presented before the "Red, White and Boom" fireworks display begins; and a $1,000 donation to be given to the charity of the winner's choice, in the winner's name.
