Bar leaders gear up for selection vote

The election is months away.

But the two sides in an ongoing battle over how Missouri selects its appeals and Supreme Court judges are getting ready for the public debate aimed at getting Missourians to vote.

Lawmakers this week endorsed a constitutional amendment to change parts of the 70-year-old Nonpartisan Court (or "Missouri") Plan - placing the issue on the Nov. 6 ballot unless Gov. Jay Nixon orders it to be decided during the Aug. 7 primary election, instead.

The plan creates a commission to consider applications whenever there is a vacancy on the appeals or Supreme courts.
