MRRL's Reading Buddy Program deadline nears

Only two days remain for area teenagers to sign up to be part of the Missouri River Regional Library's Summer Reading Buddies program. Applications for this innovative program must be postmarked May 11.

Students from local middle and high schools in Jefferson City and the surrounding area are eligible to apply. Teen volunteers must be between 12 and 18 years old and enjoy working with children.

Reading Buddies is an eight week program that runs during the months of June and July. Volunteers will attend at least one weekly session during each of those weeks. Sessions are on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The teens work with a "buddy" in kindergarten through second grade who are struggling readers attending summer school through the Jefferson City Public Schools.

Interested teens will be interviewed and, if chosen, will attend training to prepare for the program.

Mentors will encourage students to improve or maintain their reading skills throughout the summer. They will also assist with craft projects and play literacy games with their buddies each session.

The teen mentor application can be downloaded at www.mrrl.org.
