CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - One year after pleading guilty to an assault charge, former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton is returning to public service.

The Southeast Missourian ( ) reports that House Speaker Steve Tilley has appointed Jetton to co-chair the Blue Ribbon Citizens Committee on Missouri Transportation Needs.

The committee will host meetings across the state starting Monday in St. Louis, aimed at getting input from the public on transportation and safety needs.

Jetton is originally from southeast Missouri but has relocated to Branson since his guilty plea in May 2011 to a reduced misdemeanor assault charge for hitting and choking a woman during sex at her Sikeston home in 2009. He was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $950 to the victim.
