State Sen. Jason Crowell, R-Cape Girardeau, helped stage an 11-hour filibuster because he was unhappy lawmakers were adding $2.3 million to the budget for two programs at Southeast Missouri State University in his hometown.
That funding disappeared in a compromise that raises appropriations for a number of Missouri's state-owned colleges and universities, allowing the Senate on Wednesday to pass a veterans funding bill seen as a key measure to passing the state's budget by this Friday's 6 p.m. deadline.
Under the compromise, Lincoln University would receive an extra $49,663 to its nearly $17.439 million proposed appropriation - the smallest of the proposed increases.
But the four-campus University of Missouri system, Missouri State University in Springfield and Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis would get no increase.
