Your Opinion: City police deserve praise

Dear Editor:

Let's give the law enforcement officers in the form of our city police a relief from the type of reckless behavior taking place almost every day on these roadways and streets by drivers whose attention is diverted by using cellphones and texting while driving. When negotiating turns that lead onto adjourning streets and driveways, both females and males seem to be unaware of oncoming traffic.

The public owes the officers of the police department a big debt of gratitude for the service provided for the numerous times they are asked to cross to our aid at all hours of the day and night. This reader, personally is extremely grateful to those who have helped out in certain circumstances regarding her actions, some quite serious and others just plain funny.

One officer, whose name I do not recall, even stopped me close to Christmas two or three days before, asked me If I had seen his car parked at the side of the street in the vicinity of the mall and I answered with a short answer of yes. (I Learned when a youngster you should always tell the truth. That way you don't have to remember anything.) When I explained what I was doing why a twinkle appeared in his eyes - it is certain he had never been given an answer like that before. I did not get a ticket. It was funny but my answer was truthful.

From my personal observation and knowledge of the work performed by this group of professionals, it is my belief that that the police officers should receive better pay as they appear to be the most underpaid and overworked personnel at the law enforcement level and certainly are entitled to more entitlements and benefits then what they receive at present. They put their lives on line for the citizens and they certainly should be awarded more for their wonderful services. And some are blessed with two, even more children.

I support the police officers who serve under the capable chief of chief of police and support them wholeheartedly. They are given a big thanks from me for the splendid job they perform.
