JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - After vetoing a bill that would have changed the state's workers' compensation system, Missouri's governor now says he would be open to a compromise with Republican lawmakers.
In a letter to Senate leaders, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon says he would sign legislation that would prevent employees from suing their co-workers over on-the-job injuries.
Nixon also says he would support a provision to include deadly diseases contracted on the job under the workers' compensation system. But the governor says workers' with terminal diseases from toxic exposure should receive an enhanced benefit.
The Missouri Chamber of Commerce says Nixon's position appears to be an acceptable compromise.
A revised workers' compensation bill could be debated in the Senate as soon as Tuesday.
