Monday's Women's NCAA Tournament Capsules

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Courtney Vandersloot had 29 points and 17 assists to help No. 11 seed Gonzaga beat third-seeded UCLA 89-75 on Monday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, Vandersloot became the first player in Division I history - men or women - to record 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in her career. And after that benchmark was set, the senior made sure her college career would last at least one more game, in the round of 16, across town at the Spokane Arena next Saturday night.

Kayla Standish matched her career high with 30 points to lead Gonzaga (30-4).

Darxia Morris led UCLA with 20 points and Jasmine Dixon added 18, but the Bruins (28-5) were bounced in the second-round of the tournament for the second straight year, given no favors having to play on Gonzaga's home floor.

No. 1 Stanford 75, No. 9 St. John's 49

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 22 points, little sister Chiney added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Stanford overcame a slow start to reach the NCAA tournament's round of 16 with a win over St. John's.

The Cardinal (31-2) captured their school-record 63rd straight victory at Maples Pavilion, capping a perfect run by the seniors on their home floor for their careers - the first group in school history to accomplish that feat.

Stanford advances to play Saturday against the winner of fourth-seeded Kentucky and No. 5 North Carolina in the semifinals of the Spokane Regional, the very site where the Cardinal won four years ago to end a 10-year Final Four drought.

Centhya Hart scored 15 points to lead scrappy St. John's (22-11), which fell in the second round for the second straight year and still has never won twice in the tournament.

No. 5 North Carolina 86, No. 4 Kentucky 74

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Italee Lucas scored 22 points and Jessica Breland added 18, helping North Carolina hold off Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels' superior size trumping the Wildcats' awesome quickness.

North Carolina (27-8) will face Stanford on Saturday in Spokane, Wash. The fifth-seeded Tar Heels reached the round of 16 one year after going one-and-out in the NCAA tournament without Breland, who missed last season while fighting cancer.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats were led by Victoria Dunlap's 23 points. Kentucky, which hasn't beaten North Carolina in five tries, finished 25-9 a year after reaching the round of eight. Dayton Regional

No. 1 Tennessee 79, No. 8 Marquette 70

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Meighan Simmons scored 18 points and Tennessee survived a scrappy match with Marquette to advanced to the Dayton regional semifinals.

Tennessee (33-2) led by as many as 11 points in the second half and had a 62-55 lead when Marquette scored seven of the next eight points to cut it to 63-62 with 6:15 left.

The Lady Vols answered by scoring the next six points to make it 69-62 with 4:53 left and kept Marquette at bay by clamping down on defense and hitting six of their next eight foul shots.

The undersized Golden Eagles matched Tennessee's 32 points in the paint, but their 11 turnovers led to 16 points for the Lady Vols. Tennessee hit 51.7 percent of its shots while Marquette shot 40.3 percent.

Angel Robinson scored 19 points for Marquette (24-9), which has never won a second-round game in four tries.

No. 2 Notre Dame 77, No. 10 Temple 64

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Natalie Novosel scored 17 points and Devereaux Peters had her ninth career double-double to lead Notre Dame to a victory over Temple.

Peters finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Skylar Diggins added 15 points for Notre Dame (28-7), while Becca Bruszewski had 12 and Natalie Achonwa 10 off the bench.

Shey Peddy led the Owls with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, and Kristen McCarthy added 16 points. Temple (24-9) has lost all five of its second-round games.

The Owls tried to make a game of it, pulling within 52-47 on a 3-pointer by McCarthy wth 13:19 left.

But they were outscored 10-0 over the next 3 minutes to make it a 15-point game. They got no closer than nine the rest of the way.

No. 4 Ohio State 67, No. 5 Georgia Tech 60

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jantel Lavender scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half to set an NCAA record with her 135th straight double-figure scoring game, leading Ohio State past Georgia Tech.

Lavender, who had been tied with Oklahoma's Courtney Paris with 134 consecutive games of 10 or more points, also grabbed 11 rebounds. She dominated in the paint as the Buckeyes advanced to a regional semifinal Saturday against top-seeded Tennessee in Dayton.

Samantha Prahalis added 16 points and eight assists, and Ashley Adams scored 11 for the fourth-seeded Buckeyes (24-9), who have won 11 in a row.

Metra Walthour had 15 points to lead the fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets (24-11), who have never advanced past the second round in seven NCAA appearances.

Philadelphia Regional

No. 2 Duke 71, No. 10 Marist 66

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Chelsea Gray scored all 13 of her points in the second half to help Duke rally from 11 down and beat Marist, ending the Red Foxes' 27-game winning streak.

Gray hit the go-ahead free throws with 2:27 left, part of an 11-0 run that helped the second-seeded Blue Devils (31-3) escape what would have been a stunning loss on their own home court. She also knocked down a long 3-pointer, then followed her free throws by poking the ball loose from Kate Oliver and getting out in transition for a layup that capped the run and gave Duke a 65-60 lead with 1:33 left.

Jasmine Thomas scored 17 points to lead the Blue Devils, who have won 16 straight NCAA games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke advanced in the Philadelphia Regional to the round of 16 for the second straight year and will face third-seeded DePaul.

No. 3 DePaul 75, No. 6 Penn State 73

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Keisha Hampton made two foul shots with 4.9 seconds left and scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half to help DePaul rally from 14 down to defeat Penn State.

After Penn State's Julia Trogele missed from 15 feet with 20 seconds left, the Blue Demons (29-6) set up their last shot for leading scorer Hampton. Penn State's Alex Bentley was whistled for a foul after Hampton went up from behind the arc.

She missed the shot, but hit the two of the three critical free throws. Trogele misfired on a desperation 3 from near midcourt at the buzzer to seal the Blue Demons' thrilling victory. DePaul moves on to Philadelphia for the regional semifinal next weekend.

Trogele, a senior, had 14 points and 11 rebounds in her final game for Penn State (25-10).
