Jefferson City Council looking to replace 12 sirens

Cole County to consider possible locations for sirens

The city is ready to move forward with a contract for 12 new emergency sirens throughout the area, with the bill being introduced to the Jefferson City Council on Monday.

The outdoor warning sirens will replace the existing system, which is 45 years old, making it unreliable and difficult to repair.

The city currently has the same siren system that existed in Joplin when a devastating tornado hit the area in May 2011. City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus has said when the tornado hit Joplin, the system was a failure.
