TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Andy Pettitte threw a scoreless inning in his first game since ending a one-year retirement and the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 8-3 on Wednesday.
Many of the announced crowd of 10,813 at Steinbrenner Field gave Pettitte a standing ovation when took the mound to start the sixth. The left-hander allowed one baserunner, coming on Cory Vaughn's leadoff single to right.
Pettitte agreed to a minor league contract on March 16, and could be ready to join the Yankees in May.
Ike Davis hit his fourth homer for the Mets, a three-run shot off Freddy Garcia in the third. Dillon Gee gave up one run and four hits over five innings.
Backup catcher Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, then was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a surprise postgame move.
Cervelli's demotion came after the Yankees acquired catcher Chris Stewart from San Francisco for pitcher George Kontos.
ANGELS 8, DODGERS 3
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo hit tape-measure solo homers and C.J. Wilson pitched four scoreless innings, leading the Angels to the victory.
Ryan Langerhans and Jorge Cantu also homered at Dodger Stadium, helping the Angels take the rubber game of a three-game set that included a 12-3 rout on Monday night at Anaheim. The freeway foes will play six interleague games this season against the Dodgers, including a three-game set that starts June 11 at Chavez Ravine.
Pujols hit a drive in the first inning estimated at 441 feet. It was his final swing of spring training, and he finished exhibition play with seven homers, 20 RBIs and a .383 average.
DIAMONDBACKS 14, BREWERS 3
PHOENIX (AP) - Milwaukee slugger Corey Hart homered in his second game back from knee surgery.
Arizona shortstop Willie Bloomquist homered, doubled and singled to drive in three runs and stole two bases in the Cactus League finale for both teams, held at Chase Field.
Hart had arthroscopic right knee surgery on March 6, and made his spring debut Tuesday night.
Joe Saunders allowed three runs and five hits in five innings for Arizona. He struck out five and walked one.
Brewers starter Shaun Marcum gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings.
ATHLETICS 8, GIANTS 1
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Josh Donaldson hit two homers and drove in five runs off Yusmeiro Petit, and Oakland avoided a Bay Bridge Series sweep.
After a so-so start to spring training, Donaldson smacked a two-run shot to left in the second to put Oakland ahead 2-1. He followed with a three-run homer to deep left-center in the third for his only long balls this spring.
Donaldson became the starting third baseman when Scott Sizemore tore a ligament in his left knee during Oakland's first full-squad workout this spring. Donaldson finished 4 for 5 in the finale, pushing his batting average up to .270.
MARINERS 7, ROCKIES 2
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Hector Noesi allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings and Seattle won its final Cactus League game.
Noesi, who made two late-season starts as a rookie a year ago with the New York Yankees, solidified his spot as the No. 3 starter with his longest outing of the spring.
Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin gave up only a first-inning single to Ichiro Suzuki until Seattle bunched seven hits and a walk for five runs in the fourth. John Jaso, who finished with three hits, had a two-run double and Chone Figgins a run-scoring triple in the inning.
Willin Rosario had a pair of doubles for Colorado. Chris Nelson's single in fifth cut the lead to 5-1.
ROYALS 7, PADRES 6
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) - Danny Duffy struck out seven in three perfect innings, helping the Royals to the victory.
The 23-year-old left-hander is one of Kansas City's top prospects.
Terry Evans and Mario Sisson hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning for the Royals.
Veteran right-hander Matt Palmer was called in from Triple-A Tucson to start for the Padres and worked four strong innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run.
WHITE SOX 5, ASTROS 5
HOUSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer and Brian Bogusevic added a solo shot for Houston.
Chicago starter Philip Humber pitched four scoreless innings before Jose Altuve's run-scoring double and Martinez's drive put Houston up 3-2 in the fifth. Humber allowed three runs and five hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
Astros starter J.A. Happ gave up two runs and four hits while walking two in five innings.
Gordon Beckham and Alejandro De Aza hit back-to-back doubles to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead in the fifth.
