The Jefferson City Council soon will review a proposed public art policy ordinance to set up a specified procedure to allow for, and maintain, public art.
The members of the Council Committee on Administration voted Wednesday to move the proposed ordinance, which was originally brought by the Cultural Arts Commission, to the full council for review.
According to the proposed ordinance, the purpose is to integrate public art into city planning, services, design, maintenance and infrastructure to enhance the environment of public places. All recommendations for public art will be made by the commission to the City Council for approval. The proposed ordinance states the commission would use funds from its budget for treatment and maintenance of any donated public artwork. Consideration for any artwork would include looking at the amount of necessary maintenance required.
For artwork that would be housed in any facilities under the Parks and Recreation Commission, the proposed ordinance states the Parks and Recreation Commission could choose whether to approve or deny any public artwork.
