Columbia high school student dies of gunshot wound

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Columbia high school student has died after being shot near a city park, and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Police said 17-year-old Deaudre Johnson died at a Columbia hospital around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after he was shot in the upper body.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/zBBJrg ) a 19-year-old man was arrested at his Columbia home on suspicion of assault and other charges. Prosecutors were studying additional charges after Johnson died Tuesday morning.

Police don't believe that Johnson - a student at Douglass High School - was the intended target. Witnesses told investigators that the suspect had been arguing with another person who was standing next to Johnson when the shooting occurred.
