Your Opinion: Descending into a swamp of vulgarity, incivility

Dear Editor:

Yes, Jim Dyke, it is time to apologize to Sarah Palin. It is time for men to apologize to all women who have been slandered and maligned in the vilest ways - both public figures and private citizens.

We are a Christian nation and proud of it. Unfortunately it seems to be selective "Christianity." Many devout Christians are also devoted followers of Rush Limbaugh, as well as any number of the other shock jocks. When did hate-mongering, slander, distortion and calling women "sluts and prostitutes" become acceptable Christian/family values? Has "love your neighbor as yourself" become irrelevant? What about 1 Corinthians 13 "If I speak with the tongues of men or angels but so not have love, I am but a resounding gong or clanging cymbal ... and the greatest of these is love," become irrelevant in political discourse?

It is time for churches and decent men and women to stand up and say, "enough is enough." The issue of hate shouldn't be a political issue of "them versus us." To remain silent would seem to condone. And apparently some major politicians and political groups choose silence, taking a "boys will be boys" attitude.

Calling women sluts and prostitutes is largely a male power trip to remind women that they are still inferior and of less worth than men. Should women become "uppity," a verbal body-slam shows them who really is in charge. By the way, there are no derogatory words of similar vile in the English language that apply to men - how interesting.

Whatever happened to civility? It seems like we are heading toward escalating vulgarity and polarizing politics and at warp speed. Full speed ahead - ethics and civil discourse be damned? The world is watching us as we self-destruct, but who cares?
