After a full presentation on the Jefferson City Fire Department improvement plan, a proposal for a new sales tax to fund the department has been moved to the full City Council for review.
At a special Public Safety Committee meeting Thursday, department officials presented a detailed look at the improvement plan, which includes a 17 percent reduction to property taxes as it looks to switch to the dedicated one-fourth-cent sales tax.
If a sales tax is passed, the department would no longer receive funding from the five-year capital improvement sales tax, starting with sales tax G, which would allow more public safety funds from the tax to go to law enforcement.
