Fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a residential structure and its contents early this morning in Fulton, but no one was hurt.

The Fulton Fire Department responded around 12:34 a.m. to a blaze in a two-story duplex at 630 Westview Street.

Firefighters initially discovered heavy smoke and flames showing from the back deck and wall of the building. Smoke detectors had activated and alerted the occupants, who were safely outside when firefighters arrived. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Department investigators determined a barbecue grill on the deck caused the fire, which was ruled accidental.

Central Callaway Fire Protection District assisted the Fulton Fire Department, the Callaway County Ambulance District stood by at the scene, and Fulton police assisted with evacuations and traffic control.
