Committee supports urban hunting in Cape Girardeau

March 7th, 2012 in News

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A committee plans to recommend that some deer hunting be allowed inside Cape Girardeau city limits.

The Deer Management Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday night to make that recommendation at the March 19 meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council, which will make the final decision.

The Southeast Missourian reports ( that the vote came after about a dozen people spoke against the proposal.

The commission would allow bow hunting on private property, with the landowner's permission. The hunters would receive special training and be supervised by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Supporters say an increased number of deer in the city are causing traffic accidents and ruining landscapes.

Opponents say other methods of controlling deer should be explored.
