Your Opinion: Gas price uniformity

Dear Editor:

I have visited every state in the Union, lived 45 years in Missouri, 14 in California, two in Georgia, two in Texas, and a year in Jefferson City.

In none of the places I have lived have gasoline prices been so uniform as in this city. Every gas station is the same price, and when a price changes they all change at the same time, to the same price.

This lack of competition smacks of collusion. All one needs do is drive 30 miles to Columbia and one will see a variety of prices, and almost all lower than in Jefferson City. Everyone I have talked to notices this also, but no one complains.

Should not someone check into this "phenomenon"? How do the various stations get away with this? It seems it is a prima facie case of unfair pricing practices.
