Illinois narcotics suspect arrested in JC

Thursday, members of the Illinois State Police contacted the Jefferson City Police Department regarding a wanted person hiding within Jefferson City.

The suspect, known to be armed and wanted on a federal indictment for crack cocaine distribution, was also potentially a suspect in previous shots fired calls within the city.

Information was developed and within a short time the suspect's residence was located.

Surveillance on the residence was set up by the police department's community action team, and the SWAT Team was notified.

Once it was determined the suspect was inside, officers attempted to serve a search/arrest warrant.

The suspect then attempted to flee by going out on a side deck area where he encountered a number of armed SWAT members.

At that point the suspect threw down the handgun he was holding and fled back into the residence where he was arrested.

The suspect is James A. Tatum, 22, 106 East Franklin Street, and he was taken into custody for the federal narcotics indictment.

No one was injured during this incident and no other charges against Tatum are pending at this time.
