Your Opinion: Vote no on tax hike proposals

July 25th, 2012 by James P. Hill, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

Tax issues head the August primary and are more concerning to me than any particular party's primaries. It is here at the local government level where the citizens' vote really counts.

Before the voters this primary are a library tax increase and the fire fighters improvement plan sales tax increase. While not appropriately before us in August for votes the pending Obamacare tax increases, hidden in that huge albatross mandated by the Supreme Court, and a proposed 14 percent vote increase by AmerenUE headed to the Public Service Commission will further burden experiences' available living expenses.

While we are still reeling from the recession, lack of jobs and a stagnant economy, daily living costs have risen steadily while earnings have not. The government's debt and spending are out of control, particularly with regard to welfare and other social services. Mandates and the grants programs that make normally fiscally responsible leaders spend as if it is "manna from heaven.

Responsible government is a must, especially on the local level. Tax increases at this time are irresponsible and too heavy a burden. Vote no Aug. 7 and governments at all levels need to stop the giant programs. All these do is spend money that is not there - borrowed printed.

This lessens existing values and promotes inflation and devalues our currency.
