As Jefferson City's Council this week begins considering the next business year's budget plan, funding for the public access cable channel is one of the items proposed for the proverbial "chopping block."

If the allocation ceases, the service effectively would end, because city funding is the only funding for the channel - a service that almost didn't get started.

In November 1988, after entertaining proposals for a possible operator for its proposed local cable channel, council members approved using Lincoln University as the operator for a one-year, $50,000 contract. But then-Mayor Louise Gardner vetoed the bill.
