Your Opinion: Events deserve to continue

Dear Editor;

The Thursday Night Live in June and the Salute to America event were well organized and well attended community events. These events brought many people to town, were fun events for all, and were held without incident. Kudos to the organizers of these events.

I recently read in the newspaper that there is some discussion about whether event organizers should pay for the cost of additional police who are deemed necessary to patrol these events. I hope some sort of resolve can be reached so these events can continue without organizers having to pay for additional police protection.

While special purpose events may require added police protection, these events are good for all Jefferson City residents and businesses. It would seem to me the additional sales tax collected from those attending these events would offset any additional police protection costs. Even if the additional tax does not offset the total cost of police protection, these events benefit the whole community and seem to be a good expenditure of tax dollars.

I hope the organizers keep up the good work on these events and let's hope we don't have to cancel events because we can't afford police protection.
