Your Opinion: Fair Tax isn't fair for everyone

Dear Editor:

The June 30 edition of the News Tribune contained a Letter to the Editor regarding the "Fair Tax".

I continue to ask people how the "Fair Tax" will benefit most seniors, those who do not make enough money to have to pay income tax.

How will it benefit middle and low-income families who, under our current system, can deduct child care and interest on their homes? How will the "Fair Tax" benefit people who cannot find work or who are disabled and cannot work? How will the "Fair Tax" benefit the majority of our citizens who make an average of $45,000 a year or less?

I understand how the "Fair Tax" will benefit those fortunate individuals making more than the state or national average wage.

It will reduce their taxes and increase the amount of money they can keep in their pockets. However, I have never received an explanation of how this would benefit the rest of the population.

The only result I can see is that, for those of us living at or below the average income level, we will be paying more for everything we purchase, including services and goods, which for us would be a tax increase.

Therefore, I will not encourage my legislators or anyone else to support a "Fair Tax" bill.
