Water districts restrict some water use

July 5th, 2012 in News

For the 75 percent of Jefferson City residents served by Missouri American Water, expect no limits on your water usage this summer. For the remaining city residents served by public water supply districts, restrictions likely will continue through the summer.

That's because the water districts rely on deep wells to supply their water, while Missouri American gets its water from the Missouri River. And Missouri American recently completed an $11 million project to replace its water intake system, which has increased the system's capacity and reliability, said Gilbert Cole, the company's operations superintendent in Jefferson City.

Cole said the largest single-day usage for Missouri American this summer has been 6 million gallons, and he expects that to be near the peak usage. The system can handle 7 million gallons per day.

"Right now, we're in good shape," he said. "We don't anticipate having any restrictions, unless something breaks down."

The last time he remembers Missouri American issuing water-use restrictions was in 2006.
