Area man hit, killed on US 50

A Bland man was killed after he was struck at 5:15 a.m. Monday while standing in the westbound lane of U.S. 50, west of County Road 601, in Osage County.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Justin A. Pierce, 27, was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet, driven westbound by Michelle G. Kliethermes, 45, Linn.

Pierce was pronounced dead at the scene by Osage County Coroner Lois Jaegers.

Two Bland men were injured in a one-car accident at 7 p.m. Sunday on Route Y, north of Missouri 28, in Gasconade County.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Ford, driven northbound by Steven M. Kottwitz, 34, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the road, overcorrected and went off the right side of the road, striking a tree.

Kottwitz and a passenger, Trent A. Sellers, 32, were taken to Capital Region Medical Center.

Neither were wearing seat belts.

Kottwitz was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Two Versailles residents were injured in a one-car accident at 7:02 p.m. Sunday on Route B at Quarrel's Cutoff in Cooper County.

The patrol reported a 2006 Ford, driven southbound by Cornelius M. Raithel, 94, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the road, overcorrected and traveled off the right side of the road and overturned.

Raithel was taken to University Hospital in Columbia, and a passenger, Betty, L. Raithel, 83, was taken to Cooper County Memorial Hospital.

Both were wearing seat belts.
