No supporters, only one opponent testify on statewide office change

Since Republican Christopher Bond first became governor 39 years ago, the governor and lieutenant governor have been from the same political party for only half that time.

That would change under two proposed constitutional amendments presented Monday afternoon to the state Senate's Financial & Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee.

And, other than the bills' sponsors, no one supported or opposed those bills to require Missouri's governor candidates to run as a "team" with a lieutenant governor candidate.

Only one person testified against separate proposals to require four of Missouri government's statewide officers to join the governor and treasurer in facing term limits.

Voters would have to approve the proposals before the Constitution could be changed.
