Funds still being raised for animal shelter

Work continues on the new Jefferson City Animal Shelter.
Work continues on the new Jefferson City Animal Shelter.

Even as the new Jefferson City Animal Shelter is scheduled to open for business at its new location in Hyde Park this spring, money continues to be raised for shelter needs.

"The biggest question we get asked is. "If the money has been given to build the shelter, why keep trying to raise money?'" said Jackie Fischer, president of the Friends of the Jefferson City Animal Shelter. "It's because the shelter needs lab equipment, surgical supplies, dog and cat supplies, shelter software and educational programs like the importance of spay and neuter, and basic pet care."

The friends gave $225,000 to help with the nearly $2 million construction cost.

Another $50,000 will go for shelter supplies such as litter boxes and food bowls.
