Wallpaper makes a comeback with trendy finishes, patterns

Many homeowners and interior design experts turned their backs on wallpaper for the past couple of decades. The wall covering gained a negative reputation for being visually unappealing and difficult to install and remove.

Thanks to new technology and more modern, stylish designs, wallpaper is making a comeback into the good graces of home décor.

"Our wallpaper sales have increased over the last year," said Rosetta Sommers, co-owner of Sommers Interiors. "It is coming back because people want to get some new looks on their walls. They want more variation of color tones."

Sommers said the old wallpaper prints of flowers and stripes have been replaced with wallpapers that have metallic finishes, geometric shapes and 3-D elements like rhinestones. However, the traditional damask pattern is also a big seller.

Kori Bock, interior designer for Scruggs Lumber, said animal prints and printed grasscloth wallpaper, which has an earthy aesthetic, are among the most popular with her clients. She said Scruggs even carries wallpaper that is ....
