12 students escape burning school bus

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Twelve St. Louis grade school children are OK after safely getting off a school bus that caught fire.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/ztDVqQ) reports that the fire broke out around 8:30 a.m. Friday and was put out quickly. All 12 children on board were able to get out without any problems. They were loaded into another bus and continued to Dewey Elementary and Wilkinson Early Childhood schools.

A spokeswoman for the company that operates the bus says the driver noticed smoke coming from under the dashboard, then stopped to evacuate the children.

Firefighters say the engine had caught fire and was destroyed. Much of the interior was covered by soot and the seats were burned or melted.
