85-year-old man dies in Kansas City-area fire

RAYTOWN, Mo. (AP) - An 85-year-old man has died after a fire broke out in his home in the Kansas City suburb of Raytown.

The Raytown Fire Department identified the victim as Donald Sherrow.

The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/yrcnjS) reported that Sherrow used a medical alert device to contact 911 early Saturday morning. He said his home was on fire, and he was unable to get out of it.

Raytown Fire Marshal Matt Mace says the fire started around a living room recliner. Police who arrived around 5 a.m. were unable to get into the home because of the intensity of the fire. Firefighters arrived minutes later and found Sherrow unconscious in an adjacent room.

Sherrow was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
